The tram slowly turned in from the bridge like a polite metal fish, gave off a brief flash of light, and slid back into the darkness. No one spoke in the room; only the heating pipe occasionally made a soft sound, as if it too were practicing pronunciation, only more slowly than he was.
He had originally been willing to read one more page, but his eyes began to protest. Today’s sentences were not difficult; the troublesome part was those words that seemed familiar, then vanished the moment he turned away. For example, “blessing”: he always felt he knew it, but once it was placed inside a real sentence, he hesitated slightly again. So he opened his notebook and wrote a very small example sentence: May you sleep well tonight. It did not feel like a textbook blessing, but more like a note someone had casually left on the table before pulling the curtains closed.
He read it once more and felt that the sentence was too quiet, so quiet it almost had no sound. So he added another sentence beside it: “If you still have energy when you wake up tomorrow, continue reading Chinese; if not, there is no need to punish yourself.” After writing it, he smiled a little. Learning a language is sometimes like storing lamplight: not in order to immediately light up the whole city, but so that when you need it, there happens to be a little light at hand.
Downstairs, someone pushed a bicycle past. The wheels crossed the stone street with a sound that was a little uneven, yet somehow melodic. In the building opposite, a lamp was on. An old man sat at a table peeling an apple, moving so slowly that time seemed suddenly still. The apple peel grew longer and longer, hanging curved beside his hand like a small orange river. He suddenly felt a little envious of such a life: not chasing messages, not checking accounts, not rushing to prove anything, only living one ordinary evening completely.
The phone screen lit up, reminding him that there were other tasks. He glanced at it, neither refusing nor immediately accepting, and simply turned the phone over. In that moment, he felt he was not lazy, nor escaping; he only needed a brief blank space, letting the words he had read today slowly connect in his mind. The wind outside made the glass cold. He turned off the main light and left only the small lamp by the desk. A few Chinese sentences were still moving gently in his heart, like several small orange lamps quietly storing the words the day had not finished saying.
A quiet Prague evening gives the text atmosphere without returning to recent Mass or café scenes.
